Material You

Material You, as the name suggests, is all about personalization, and is the biggest overhaul since it launched in 2014. With Material You, the team redesigned components, along with new shapes, new colors, new lighting, and new animations, hoping to unify its software and hardware teams. This new visual design system will dictate the look and feel of the company's products for years to come.

Shapes

With Material You, there was a larger focus on customization which created an appetite around expanding our overall shape library.  My role as a motion designer, was to push the shape language and explore a range of ways that new shapes could either support existing interactions or create new ones. These experiments soon be introduced with Pixel products and feature teams for Android 12. 

Unfurling

Components emphasize shape during enter and exits. A notification, for example, unfurls as it enters. This squash and stretch movement inspired a flatter spatial model where transitions are co-planar. 

Co-Planar Elevation

In an effort to improve the overall spatial model, I explored the idea of reducing the use of transitions that relied on z-space movement. Instead of overlapping sheets, shadows, and depth, I explored the possibility of components living co-planar that bump or squeeze content out of the way.

Persistent Interactions

Single surface transitions were heavily explored in order to create and maintain continuity. I explored with new and existing gestures such as Pinch and Stretch, in order to expand widgets to full-screen apps.

Expression

Throughout the process of building Material Next, it was heavily encouraged to go wild and experiment with different styles unbound from any meaning. Many of these experiments ended up becoming pillars to the overall visual design language.
